National Handwriting Day - January 23

January 22, 2010

Don’t you like getting mail when it’s not junk or bills? It’s always a nice surprise to open the mailbox and find a card or letter from a friend, especially when it’s not our birthday. Tomorrow, January 23, is National Handwriting Day – what a wonderful opportunity for you to reacquaint yourself with a piece of paper and a pen. Take a moment and step away from your keyboard, practice your cursive and jot down a friendly note to a friend you haven’t seen in a while. It will make their day!

Here are some fun facts:

  • January 23rd was chosen as National Handwriting Day because this is the birthday of John Hancock. John Hancock was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence.

  • A typical pencil can draw a line 35 miles long or write about 45,000 words.

  • Most ballpoint pens will draw a line 4,000 to 7,500 feet long.

  • Comedian, actor and educator, Bill Cosby is the most famous pen enthusiast in the world. For years he lent his talent to promoting New York City Fountain Pen Hospital.
